People who own property within city limits are required to pay property taxes to the City of Yellowknife every year. Below is a breakdown of how these taxes can be paid.
Property owners are encouraged to create an account with Yellowknife eServices, which will allow them to view their property tax balance.
Note: only utility bills can be paid via this portal. Property taxes can be paid either in two installments or by pre-authorized monthly payments.
How to Pay
- In-person at City Hall by cash, cheque and debit card
- By mail with a cheque to PO Box 580, Yellowknife, NT X1A 2N4
- After hours, by dropping off a cheque at the convenient drop box located at City Hall
- Through your bank’s online banking or telephone banking systems (please allow 2 - 3 business days for processing)
Late Payments
Accounts that are not paid by the due date will be charged 1.8% interest per month until the taxes are paid in full.
On December 31 of each year, overdue utility charges will be transferred to the property owner's tax account. If you have pre-authorized payments set up and there is any outstanding utility balance transferred to your tax account, your pre-authorized monthly payments will be discontinued without prior notice.
Property Tax Exemptions for Societies Policy
The Property Tax Exemption Criteria for Societies policy (linked below) mandates that organizations must be incorporated under the Societies Act, maintain good standing with the Registrar, and use the property for non-profit social, community, or recreational purposes for the general public, not as a residence.
