The City of Yellowknife is committed to making our services and streets accessible to all.

Listed below are a few of our programs and services that do just that:

  • Inclusion NWT has provided support to people with intellectual disabilities and their families in the NWT, since 1962. Skills training, supported living, and respite are just a few of the services offered.

  • YKFLEX - Commonly known as Yellowknife Accessible Transit, provides door-to-door service for registered users who are unable to board, ride, or disembark the fixed route transit system with safety and dignity due to a temporary or permanent physical or functional disability.

  • Accessible Parking Permit - The permit is issued to the person, not the vehicle. It allows the registered user to park any car they are using in specially identified parking spots. NWT parking permits may be used in any Province or Territory across Canada.

  • Senior and Disabilities Tax Relief - The Senior Citizens’ and Disabled Persons’ Property Tax Relief is a program that helps seniors and people with disabilities pay less or no property tax. Taxes are lowered depending on the type of property owned or occupied. You have to apply for this program every year.

Property owners who are 65 years of age or older may be eligible for property tax relief of up to $2,000 per year on their primary residence.

  • Accessibility Advisory Committee provides advice to the City on identifying, preventing, and eliminating barriers for people with disabilities in municipal programs, services, initiatives, and facilities. The Committee plays a pivotal role in helping the city become an accessible community.

  • Senior Parking Meter Exemption - Senior Citizens may be eligible to get a parking meter exemption sticker if they are the only driver of the vehicle. You can apply for a parking exemption by visiting the Municipal Enforcement Division at City Hall.
